Irene Phelps was born in February 1953 and spent her childhood and early life in Beaconsfield Tasmania. She attended Beaconsfield Primary School through to Grade 6 and then attended Riverside High School when it was in its infancy. She was the youngest child of five raised by Ron and Mary Phelps. Irene left school at 15, moved to Melbourne at 17 and began her passion for travel at 19 when she moved to London for two years. Irene’s early career was in retail fashion and she was a very successful businesswoman, establishing a commercial real estate company in the late 1980s. Irene was a smoker and in 2009 she was diagnosed with lung cancer, and passed away on 24 June 2012. She was 59 years old. Upon reflection of her life, Irene realised she was given little opportunity in Beaconsfield as a young girl. Although she was successful in business, Irene knew it would have been much easier for her if she had continued her education. It is for this reason that Irene’s charitable Trust is offering a scholarship at the University of Tasmania.
