Are you thinking about studying Honours in 2021? Do you have a major in Sociology? Are you interested in sport and gender, sport and alcohol, alcohol and gender or all three?
If so, then Professor Catherine Palmer wants to hear from you!
In 2020 Professors Catherine Palmer and Steve Jackson (University of Otago, NZ) were awarded a Discovery Research Project grant from the Australian Research Council to support their research project: A Game Changer - Alcohol and Women’s Sport in Australia (ARCDP200101432).
Their project examines the nexus between women and alcohol in Australian sport. It investigates the meanings drinking may have for sportswomen and female fans, builds new theoretical frameworks, and develops policy initiatives for rethinking drinking, gender and sport.
Catherine is seeking to supervise up to two Honours students (to be based at the University of Tasmania) whose major research thesis will explore one of three research questions through an investigation of sub-topics (see eligibility criteria for research questions and sub-topics).
Eligibility
Available to students commencing R4A, Bachelor of Arts with Honours (Sociology) in Semester 1, 2021, in the College of Arts, Law and Education and will be undertaking a major research thesis exploring one of the following research questions through an investigation of the following sub topics.
The project addresses three research questions:
1. Why has women’s drinking in sport largely eluded sociological inquiry?
2. How is drinking understood and experienced by women Australian sports fans and athletes?
3. How can the research contribute to new understandings and policy directions as they relate to sport and alcohol among women?
