The Medical Council of Tasmania, upon its dissolution in 2010, provided the University of Tasmania Foundation with a $1 million gift to endow scholarships for deserving Tasmanian students to study medicine at the University. The University, through its Foundation provided a further $150,000.
The Medical Council of Tasmania was established in 1907. Its precursor the Court of Medical Examiners was established in 1837. It was the first body established in Australia for the registration of medical practitioners. With the establishment of the Medical Board of Australia on 1 July 2010 the Medical Council of Tasmania became the Tasmanian Board of the Medical Board of Australia.
Eligibility
Available to a student who has completed the majority of their secondary schooling in Tasmania, can demonstrate financial need, is an Australian citizen, Permanent Resident or Humanitarian Visa Holder, and is commencing the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree in Semester 1, 2023. It is expected that shortlisted applicants will be interviewed in the second week of January.
On-going Eligibility
To retain this award, recipients are required to study full-time; achieve a minimum Pass result in all units studied and make satisfactory academic progress each semester; and not be in receipt of another scholarship from the University of Tasmania.
